The episode began with a flashback to a 2009 audition where reject Blake Patterson sang Charlie Chaplin's "Smile" while, ironically, crying after being rejected. Quite a flashback for Idol followers.
Now to the actual auditions. First up was Jordan Dorsey, who received an instant, unanimous "yes" after auditioning with "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". Another memorable audition came from Jovany Barreto (I don't think my name's origins came from his), who not only sang a Spanish song for his audition, but he also took off his top in front of his "goddess", judge Jennifer Lopez. Fellow judges Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson followed suit, showing off their decently-framed/rotund frames alongside Jovany's ripped bod - all in front of a stunned J.Lo, making her go "What the heck just happened in here?!". Well, that's the New Orleans spirit for ya (I think). (Actually, Randy did not pull up his shirt all the way - he just showed his belly. Cute?)
My favourites from this episode include chubby 15-year-old Jacee Badeaux (with a voice that I am super-jealous of), and Brett Loewenstern, a bullying target whose story is reminiscent of mine and is someone whom I can relate to. His singing pipes, which sounded totally different from his soft speaking voice, impressed me the most, coming out of this funny-looking kid. But my ultimate favourite from this episode is Paris Tassin, a mother to a special-needs child, whose moving and powerful rendition of Carrie Underwood's "Temporary Home" made J.Lo turn on the waterworks and impressed me the most. I predict she will go far in the competition.
Now to those who didn't make the cut: "Idol Camp" alum Alex Attardo's rendition of "Proud Mary" put me off, considering that he went to "Idol Camp" which took place 3 years ago when he was 15; and Steven Tyler/Mick Jagger lookalike Gabriel Frank scared (or scarred) me with his rendition of Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance".
In the end, 37 made it through to Hollywood. The episode ended with J.Lo paying a visit to Paris' daughter Kira, a little touching moment to end off the episode.
From this episode, it may be evident that Season 10 will focus more on the "yes"-es compared to the "no"-s, which is the reason everyone loves the audition episodes in the first place. But hey, it is a singing competition, so focusing on the positives may make or break the season in general.
Next week, we go to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for the first time for auditions.
